With the product quality and customer service you get from Miles to Go clothing, you might be surprised to find out it’s all done by one guy. Greg Kerr was turned off by the clothing available in stores and online so he started Miles to Go as a creative outlet for himself. Being heavily influenced by art and literature, Greg decided to combine the two and put them on t-shirts. Instead of the meaningless logos and names that flood the apparel industry, Greg wanted to create a piece of walking art that has a story behind it. And he has done just that with Miles to Go clothing.

All Miles to Go t-shirts (and hoodies, tank-tops, track jackets & hot pants) are printed on American Apparel garments. So you know you’re getting the best quality blank. But one of the best parts about mtg is the size and quality of their prints. Almost all of their designs take up the entire front of the shirt and they are all printed with a specialty ink called discharge. If you are unfamiliar, discharge ink basically removes the dye from the cotton fibers and replaces it with the design. This results in a super soft feel, almost as if you’re just wearing a blank cotton shirt…but the amazing artwork is still there!

Speaking of amazing artwork, Miles to Go uses some of the best designers out there. Their lineup includes Dave Quiggle, Godmachine, and Dan Mumford. The new Fall line being released in August will feature some awesome pieces from Keaton Henson and Rob Dobi.

And like I said before, the customer service you receive at Miles to Go is top notch. If you have any questions or issues, Greg is always willing to help you sort it out. He even takes suggestions for possible future designs, so if you have an idea, let him know!

If you’d like to pick up any of the incredible designs over at Miles to Go, use this special discount code Greg made just for you! “Tilteed” takes 20% off your entire order.

Do you have a favorite indie clothing line that you think deserves mentioning on the Tilteed Blog? Let us know in the comments and we’ll take a look!

Holy cow! One year! We’re happily celebrating Tilteed’s 1 year anniversary this month and we’re doing it the only way we know how - by giving away as much awesome stuff as we can.

Over the past year we’ve had the pleasure of printing t-shirts by some amazingly talented artists and sending them all over the world. We have fans who’ve bought t-shirts from Japan to Germany to our own backyard here in Portland, Oregon. We’ve shipped shirts to China, Argentina, and even Pakistan. People are wearing Tilteed shirts on 6 of the 7 continents - everywhere except Antarctica so far. But maybe our 2nd year will be the one where we make it to the southernmost continent.

Here at Tilteed headquarters we have a map on the wall with pins stuck in all of the places we’ve been shipping. We’re simply blown away by the support the t-shirt community and t-shirt fans have shown us.

The Tilteed 1 Year Anniversary Giveaway!

On July 26th, we’re going to be drawing 10 winners to win the following prizes:

PRIZES

Grand Prize:
1 Flip UltraHD
1 Inprnt.com Art Print - 13” x 19” (1st choice of print)
Year of Tilteed Tees (2 a month, 24 total)

Runner Up:
1 Inprnt.com Art Print - 13” x 19” (2nd choice of print)
Year of Tilteed Tees (2 a month, 24 total)

3rd Place:
1 Inprnt.com Art Print - 13” x 19”
5 Tilteed Tees

4th - 10th Place:
2 Tilteed Tees

(We’ve got 3 art prints from Inprnt.com featuring 3 amazing Tilteed artists: a.mar.illo, C86, and Wotto. Grand Prize winner will get their first choice of print, followed by the Runner Up and so on.)

HOW TO ENTER

Each day between now and July 26th, we’re going to be giving away t-shirts. The winners of each daily giveaway will receive 1 entry into the final drawing.

So everyday there will be a new chance to win a t-shirt as well as win an entry into our grand prize drawing. The daily contests will be mostly simple, easy to do things like tweeting about our tees, leaving a comment, sharing on Facebook, guessing the next color t-shirt, etc.

Also, there is NO limit to the number of entries into the grand prize drawing that you can win. You can have 1 entry or you can have 10 entries - all it takes is participation in the dailies and a little bit of luck.

The only requirement to gain an entry is to make sure that you are a Tilteed member. You can register here.

LETS GET STARTED

We’ll pick a random winner Tuesday at 6PM PST!

So I, dunz0, now have a weekly column over at Coty Gonzales’s t-shirt blog! Last week, I gave an introduction to what I’ve been up to in Portland at Tilteed headquarters.
SEIBEI is a brand that has been around for several years now. Started by David Murray, SEIBEI is home to a plethora of fun, silly designs. I was first drawn to this shop when I discovered the Sandwich Dinosaur t-shirt. Although the design is simple, that’s exactly what makes it perfect. The bossy little dinosaur wants nothing more than a nice, filling sandwich, so go make him one!

What I love about SEIBEI is that it has designs that are out of the ordinary, including shirts that say “I’ll Never Stop Pooping” and “I’m Fat Let’s Party!” Not to mention, many of the shirts are chockfull of bright colors and perfect for the summertime. They even have an Intramural Zombie Hunter shirt that you can customize based on the amount of gore. Overall, it’s a great company full of monsters, dinosaurs, and all things weird.

Regan Smith Clarke is a t-shirt company based in Boston that launched at the beginning of March, 2010. When the site went live, I kept thinking to myself what a great name the company had. I was surprised to find out that the name of the brand is actually the owner’s real name. It’s a very strong and unique name, which is very fitting for the brand.

All of the t-shirts and posters in the line have been inspired by vintage art, and Regan Smith Clarke worked with designer Danny Jones (a.k.a. YASLY) for this first batch of items. Each design has some kind of meaning or message behind it, so the shirts are more than just for your viewing pleasure. We absolutely love seeing the combination of simple designs with deep messages!

Be sure to keep an eye out in the shop for new products, including a collaboration with another Boston-based brand, Cavata Clothing. We see big things in the future for this brand!

We couldn’t think of a better way to show our appreciation for all the wonderful bloggers than to feature them right here in the Tilteed blog! We’ll be doing this weekly from now on, so be sure to check back to learn about all the great blogs out there who are showing their support.

MJ of Compete-tee-tion put together a great post last month about the curators of four shirt sites and their favorite t-shirts. All of our Tilteed curators were included, so you can get to know them a little bit better by reading about their design tastes and why they love the tees they picked.

Thanks for including our t-shirt curators in your fun and informative post, MJ!

Andy, the t-shirt blog superstar of Hide Your Arms, was kind enough to write a post about one of our recent Tilteed Limited designs! Releasing Dark Matter by YAWN was featured on HYA while it was the current Limited design. In agreement with the post, our curator dunz0 also saw something reminiscent of the Sword in the Stone.

Thanks for the mention, Andy!

We agree that the silver/white/lime green color combo looks sizzling!

Thanks for the awesome read, Ivy!

We’ve had some artist interviews, curator interviews, submission reviews and plenty of other t-shirt news here on the little old blog. We thought it was about time to get up a fan interview! Who is it that buys our shirts? Who’s rocking our latest Tilteed Limited print?

Today’s interview is with Tilteed Superfan: Matt Eyer. You can find him on Facebook here: Matt Eyer or on Twitter @matteyer.

Matt’s a t-shirt nut. Not only does he own multiple Tilteed prints, but he frequents all of the t-shirt sites out there. Plus, he is the Art Director for a new t-shirt line: The Ropeadope Design Collective. Check it out!

Do you want to be profiled or do you have an idea that you’d like to see on the Tilteed Blog? shoot us an email: info(at)tilteed(dot)com

First, tell us a little bit more about Ropeadope and how you became involved with them - the site and label.

Ropeadope has been a record label, clothing company, and daily updated webspot since 1999. As our logo says, Music * Clothing * Culture. The coolest thing about Ropeadope is that they’ve never signed a band they don’t like. and never will. It’s about the music, not the money. I first started interning at Ropeadope a little over a year ago as a “product manager”. I helped with getting everything ready for new record releases, including one sheets, artist bios, album artwork, and masters. I also posted music reviews on ropeadope.com, which I still do today and you can read here! (http://www.ropeadope.com/team/Matt/)

How did you first get pulled into the online t-shirt world? What sites do you continuously check? Who’s your favorite artist?

During the summer of 2008, I read a post about teefury.com on t-shirtforums.com and decided to check it out. I’ve been hooked ever since. There hasn’t been a day that’s passed where I haven’t looked at Teefury multiple times. Then I discovered Design By Humans and it kept going from there. Teefury and DBH are the two I check most often. Tilteed is probably my third most checked site. I love the stuff you guys are putting out and the quality of the prints is some of the best around.

Favorite artist is such a hard question cause there are so many talented designers and illustrators creating t-shirts right now. (that’s why I have over 300 tees) If I had to pick one though, it would be Wotto. I love his style and pretty much every piece of art he’s ever done. I probably own 10 or more wotto shirts at this point and I recently bought one of his paintings.

Besides Ropeadope, what are you doing with yourself? What do you do in your free time?

Well I’m really close to graduating from Temple University (2 more classes), so school takes up a good amount of my time. Other than that, I’ve been planning/organizing/creating my own apparel line. I’ve lived in Philadelphia for most of my life (I lived in Germany for a year though!), so I’m very close with the city. Other than your typical tourist shirts, I’ve never really seen any cool Philadelphia t-shirt designs. So I decided to make them. I released a hoodie in February and the first tee is being released very soon. There is much more to come from Wear Liberty. Stay tuned this summer. I’m also very involved in the local music scene. My close friends are all musicians, so I’m always helping them record and produce their new records as well as promote their music and shows.

How did the idea of starting a t-shirt line for Ropeadope come about? And explain the line’s format - how often will you release new shirts, etc…

Ropeadope has been selling t-shirts for 10 years, but for 2010 we decided to do something different. New artists, new ideas, new shirts. The Ropeadope Design Collective is an ever changing group of artists from around the world and we are releasing 8 new designs every three months. (there might be a mini summer release hint hint) They are all limited edition and only available for a one month pre-sale. The designs are screen printed on American Apparel shirts and all orders include free shipping and a free CD from Ropeadope Records.

What’s your favorite part of the experience so far?

My favorite part is definitely working with the artists. Networking is a huge part of my job for both the music industry and the t-shirt world, so working with and building relationships with all of these awesome people has been a great experience.

What’s the hardest part about starting a clothing line that you’ve figured out so far?

Getting the word out, especially for something that’s brand new. Ropeadope has been around for 10 years and has already established a name for themselves, but the Design Collective is a completely new format for our tees. As I said before, new artists, new ideas, new shirts. It’s been a lot of fun promoting the line though and I’ve gotten lots of positive comments which are always great to hear.

Your personal favorite design in the current line-up.

All of them. I’m really looking forward to wearing each of the 8 shirts when they’re printed next week. I picked and helped direct the artists to create the designs because I love them all.

As a pug owner, is it a requirement that you occasionally dress your pug up in ridiculous outfits? What are Oliver’s feelings on this?

I’ve actually never dressed him up, which I’m sad to say. But I always think about getting him a stegosaurus costume. I really need to do it one of these days. A friend of mine made him wear a dress though while she was puppysitting for me. I don’t think Oliver enjoyed it.

Final thoughts or plug about Ropeadope.

Buy a shirt! They’re only on sale for 1 more days (til May 20th). and check out some Ropeadope bands. We put out a variety of great music, so you’re bound to find something you like.

DCAY: Other than T-shirts, name 3 other things that you enjoy, starting with “T”.

Wotto: Turtles, Tin Men and Traveling.

Do you have any activities that help inspire you while creating new work?

Listening to music and looking around me constantly seem to be my inspiration. I find inspiration in the strangest of places, mostly when observing people.

Out of all the contests you have entered, how many winning T-shirt contest entries do you have under your belt at present?

Oh man too many to count to be honest. I don’t tend to keep a tally but I know I have had over 100 Tees printed now, the Billabong one was my 100th which was pretty cool.

Character design seems to feature in your work a lot, name a couple of your favorite characters.

I love The Mayor out of “Nightmare Before Christmas,” how he moves, talks and the darkness of his expression. Gizmo is another of my favorites because while he is cute he is also capable of cause mayhem and disorder. Moishe is probably my favorite character from “Where
the Wild Things Are.” Simply brilliant, his expression, his playfulness and the stripey body all make him a fantastic source of inspiration for me.

What is your most favorite achievement in tee design?

Winning at Threadless is always an achievement, the standard is so high there. My own personal accomplishment in T-shirt design was my recent Billabong tee. Seeing it in stores was cool and gave me a coy sense of pride.

Do you have any other artistic outlets, such as painting, sculpture, or interpretive dance??

I do like to dance! I paint quite a lot and I have a few group shows coming up, gallery shows are awesome and definitely something I intend to build on. I recently painted a skate deck too and that was a lot of fun. 3D objects are harder to paint so I enjoy that challenge.

Tell us something about yourself that is an unknown fact.

On thing people don’t know about me is that I used to be a teacher. Yep, I taught art for a few years and it was a very valuable learning experience for me. I really enjoyed working with kids and eventually I worked with kids with emotional and behavioral difficulties. I seemed to gel with them best. I did some awesome art projects and the kids taught me a lot about myself. Teachers are massively overlooked and the good ones can be life changing.

What’s your favorite pizza topping combination?

Yikes that’s a tricky question. I like all pizza but I can’t resist a Calzone, any topping.

Have you ever had any fans of your illustrations go so far as to get a tattoo of your designs?

Yes I have a guy who is currently getting a tattoo of a personal piece I did just for him. I find it very flattering and humbling that someone would want a piece of my art on their body forever. It’s very cool. I’ve always wanted a tattoo myself, well sleeves actually but I have never settled on exactly what I want.

I’m a music guy; music inspires me and is always playing in the background while working. What kinds of music have you been listening to as of late?

I have been listening to some old Smashing Pumpkins lately but I am in dire need of some new music. My tastes change so much so it’s hard to keep up with my fickle self. I like a range of music though and sometimes I wanna work to heavy stuff and other times I want to hear a tinkling piano.

Outside of being an artist, what would your absolute “dream” job be? (does not have to be a realistic answer!)

I always wanted to be a chef as a kid, I guess that’s pretty creative too. I wouldn’t consider that a dream job though. I’d love to be in a band, a really cool band like Radiohead that isn’t all about image. That or a food critic, I do love my food.

PLUG TIME: Got a contest entry up for voting that you’d like the reader’s help you out with?

I have lots of things out there at the moment but the best thing for me to plug would be my own shop.
Here’s a coupon code for you tilteed people, TILTEED will get you 30% off, you caught me on a generous day.

How did you decide to get into t-shirt blogging?

Well, I have been in love with t-shirts ever since I can remember. Starting from when I was about 12 years old, I would bring back at least 30 tees every time I visited my family in Thailand. Why? Because I simply loved wearing designs that no one else had. When I finally started online shopping, or at least online store browsing, I fell in love with the growing tee world. The first “indie” t-shirt site that I fell in love with was Threadless, back in high school. After learning about Threadless, I got really interested in what else was out there. Tees weren’t really an integral part of my life until my freshman year of college. I remember when it was a huge deal to see someone else wearing Threadless, because nobody else knew what it was. Before I knew it, I was purchasing tees like crazy. I remember when Shirt.Woot first launched. I stayed up until 1 am every night for at least a week just to catch a glimpse of the new tee.

I didn’t start Loving This Tee until May of last year. I had wanted to blog at least a year and a half before then, but I felt like I just didn’t have that initial drive to actually do it. Well, the extra push finally came, and it was during my first week of final exams last spring semester. What perfect timing, right? I first started a Twitter account and began following many t-shirt companies. In just a few weeks, I learned about so many brands that I never knew were out there. I then knew that this was the right choice. The thought of seeking out new companies and keeping up with current tee news simply excited me. I didn’t want to think about anything else besides t-shirts. I guess this was horrible for my concentration during finals, but it was a great feeling to finally find something that I was more than 110% passionate about.

Loving This Tee is a place where I can write about all of my favorite tee finds. I don’t post about anything if I don’t actually like it, so it’s definitely very personal to me. I don’t want to have a t-shirt blog just for the sake of having a t-shirt blog. I want the designs I write about to tell the world a little bit about who I am.

How many t-shirts do you own and which are your favorites.

Wow, this is one tough question. Well, I don’t know if I can give you any exact numbers, but I’ll try to formulate some sort of figure. So I’m at college now, and that means limited space. With that said, I switch out t-shirts every time I go home. This usually entails bringing about 30 home and switching them out for a different 30. So from these calculations, I have at least 60. But I really don’t think that that’s all because I go home more than once the entire year and switch out shirts. I want to say that I have at least 100 tees. This excludes the tees that are in great condition that I can still fit into but no longer want to wear. I am always getting more tees on a regular basis, so the number continuously increases.

Because of this, my favorites change depending on what tees I have with me. Right now, I think that my top favorites in no particular order would have to be “FOREVER WEIRD” from SEIBEI, “Tiger Turmoil” from OMUNKY, “Tiger” from Party Smartie, and Tilteed’s very own “Deep Blue Destroyer.”

Hi. My name is Bo, and I’m a shirtoholic.

Tell us about what you’re studying in college.

My major is in Psychology, and right now I’m in the midst of taking a couple of psych courses to finish out my college career. I am also getting my minor in Geology and finished all of those requirements last semester. Everyone is always quite surprised when they hear those two subjects together. I guess they’re very different, but I do love them both. I’m quite sad to be graduating this spring. College has been such a great experience, and I can’t believe that I’ll be finished in just three months.

What are you going to be doing in 5 years?

That’s one answer that I’d like to know myself. My dream is to do something tee-related. I’d love to be working full-time in a tee company, in a setting that’s work efficient yet fun and enjoyable to be in. I won’t be picky, though. I’m just hoping that I’ll have a steady full-time job that I don’t hate going to every morning. I’ve got a lot of motivation and drive in me, and I’d like to show the world what I’m capable of. I also hope to be the proud parent of an adopted kitten in 5 years, if not sooner.

What kind of artwork are you looking for and what do you hope to accomplish as a curator?

I’m looking for a broad range of styles. I can’t truly sum it up because there will always be ideas, color combinations, and styles that I have never seen before and end up falling in love with. I love urban street art and artists like 123Klan, and I am amazed by a lot of the art that I see in the designer toy culture. On the other end of the spectrum, I’m also a fan of beautiful linework with lots of details. And just to throw this out there, I love Pokemon, Ninja Turtles, and most things 90s. I hope to be able to bring in many different styles of art and to show the Tilteed fans a great sample of the fantastic artwork that is out there today. I also hope that I can induce some positive emotions in the Tilteed community with my selections!

Tell us a little bit more about Jaden Kale and your day to day t-shirt life.

Well, I’m an East Coast girl, landlocked in the Midwest. I was actually born in Virgina, and lived for a few years in Hawaii before I spent the bulk of my childhood in Rhode Island. When my father retired from the Navy, we made the final move out here to where he grew up: Wisconsin, just before I started high school and I’ve been out here ever since. I would have to say I’m a fairly easy-going person. I’m always up for something new and exciting, and among other things, I’m an experimental foodie through and through. I am one of those people who will try new techniques or flavors while cooking, but rest assured, I’m not even close to being a candidate for “Worst Cooks in America”.

I frequently like to curl up in a blanket and feel all tucked in for the evening while I draw. I absolutely must have music on when working and it’s not uncommon to find me sketching in one of my books or, in a pinch, grabbing scrap paper and doodling to my heart’s content outside of the house. My sketchbooks usually travel with me. And if I’m in a particularly good mood, you’ll likely hear me singing along with my tunes. No worries… I can actually sing on key. On any given week day, I watch Woot, DBH, TeeFury and Threadless like a hawk to see what kind of new trends and styles are printing everywhere. I keep an eye on smaller sites like Goodjoe, and here at Tilteed, as well as others, because I want to see how new companies progress and fight it out against the big boys. And when I’m not doing that, I will check out artwork from any number of designers out there to see how they’ve progressed as well.

As an artist, how did you get into t-shirt design specifically?

A couple years ago, at the beginning of shirt.woot.com’s infancy, a friend introduced me to the craziness of competitive t-shirt derbies. I started them for fun that fall and by the beginning of March in 2008, I had my first print. I must say, it was a nice birthday present to have bestowed upon me. I’ve been hooked ever since.

As a Winconsinite, what’s your favorite cheese?

God, there are so many choices! I will first point out that, if you really want to try something cheesy from Wisconsin, indulge in beer-battered cheese curds. It sounds bad, but trust me, they are heavenly little melted balls of fried cheese. Since I have to choose one favorite cheese though, I’ll have to say garlic havarti cheese. It satiates my love of garlic while still getting that creamy, dairy product I’ve come to know and love.

Of the big kids, who do you own the most tees from: Threadless, DBH, or Woot?

Since I was introduced to Woot first, I believe they are the store I own the most tees from. And I’m not afraid to say, I own approximately 90 some tees (not including all the randoms I’m selling or trading off at http://www.TeeTrade.org) just from Woot alone. All in all, I probably own over 300 tees combining all from Woot, DBH & TeeFury, Threadless and all the smaller sites I frequent.

What kind of artwork are you looking for and what do you hope to accomplish as a curator?

I’m hoping to find a wide range of artwork. I enjoy the bizarre and the structured. The charming and the creepy. And artistic, artistic, artistic!! I like high amount of detail in what I decide on, and I’ll even consider a few pop culture pieces… provided, of course, that they are done well and are outside your traditional cheap joke tee. I can only hope I do Tilteed justice while I curate here.

Tell us about AdderXYU in at least 5 sentences.

AdderXYU is me, if amplified: the passion is real, for better or for worse. It’s a passion that extends to my first loves of literature and music as well. It’s a desire to see greatness in a world that has seemed to give up on it. It’s a desperate plea that we start re-educating ourselves in a culture where education is seen as elite and almost wrong. And somewhere under all that, it’s a dashing young man who likes a good martini and a scintillating conversation.

We have too few days to settle for being tied down, limited, and forced into generic experiences. I’ve wasted enough of them, as we all have. As a person, I’m trying to waste as little more as possible. Online, I’m hoping that people will get out of their own ruts and live for the unique instead of the bland. One could argue that alone is a waste of my own life, but I don’t buy it. It’s not all I’ve got.

Tell us about AdderXYU in 3 words.

Impossible. Too loquacious.

Singularitee - Give us the story, why did you start it, when did you start it, what it means to you.

SingulariTee was born of frustration in many ways. It was created because the shirt world, and consequently the art world, has forgotten what art means. There’s a huge movement toward creating solely for money, as opposed to creating for the love of art. I started the blog in hopes of showcasing people I felt really deserved the support. All artists deserve to make a living off their work, but right now it’s as though you can’t make a cent without treading the same old ground, or ramming tired pop-culture tropes into the ground. So the blog was started in September ‘08, in hopes of getting more exposure for work I felt deserved it, to counteract the much more powerful influences of “whatever sells best”. Art at its best needs to be praised, and the art world has become so cynical that even amazing, talented illustrators will ignore their talents and their creative sparks and everything that makes them amazing just for a quick buck. SingulariTee is in many ways the equivalent of college kids lending each other a Pixies tape while the rest of the world praised Milli Vanilli. It’s remembering that what’s popular is not always what is important, or what will last, or even what’s real. It’s giving some glimmer of exposure to the gems hiding behind the work that is all sales and no substance.

If the blog could have one widespread effect, it would be inspiring some group, large or small, to start putting themselves back into their art, and to start appreciating art which contains more of the designer. To understand that there is good parody and bad, times when someone is using style and times when they are aping something else. To remember that there is a difference between making money from art and making art for money, and that one is always less respectable. It’s not elitist to demand quality, and I strive to bring the tee world diverse work that proves that point. A t-shirt graphic is its own artistic expression, and the widespread idea that a shirt is just a shirt is an insult that I strive to correct. I love finding new things, love seeing my favorite designs print, and through the blog, I hope to be able to share that.

Describe your own personal favorite t-shirt.

That is almost impossible, but one of my faves is an old Woot tee from Monsieur Pimpant. It’s a black and white graphic of a man inside a huge cat suit, or possibly being eaten by a huge cat. It’s bizarre, the graphic is sketchy, and the whole graphic sits at the bottom right corner of the shirt. But the colors (it’s on cranberry) are perfect, and it’s just too interesting to resist. I got it in my first random bag… it struck me immediately, and remains one of my favorite tees. And in some ways, getting that tee and seeing how perfect it was made me the persona I am today. A great design is one that can grow on you like that, not necessarily something you need immediately.

What kind of artwork are you looking for and what do you hope to accomplish as a curator?

If I could put it simply, surprise me. I love strong, smart concepts. I love powerful abstraction. I probably like animals more than I should. But I’m willing to consider anything. Just keep quality your first aim. I’m way more likely to fight to print something original and unique to this site than one more tired rehash of the same roaring bear photo. And that’s pretty much what I’d like to accomplish. We all have a very real ability to build fanbases for what we do, instead of doing what builds fanbases. Independent artists of all sorts have done it for years. If I could bring anything to Tilteed, it would be to help the site build a customer base that loves what this site does, and is open to the diverse, quality work that I feel the site has built its reputation on until now.
