THIS SONG IS ABOUT A UNICORN

Curator’s Statement:
The world moves at an incredibly fast pace, so it’s nice to see a t-shirt design that allows you to take a step back to enjoy the finer details in life, including the far reaches of your imagination. Sit back and let your creativity run free as this man sings you a song about a majestic mythological creature. When I look at this piece by Oatmeal, I am reminded of the music of Iron & Wine and similar folk musicians. The illustration simply puts me in a calm state, and I hope that you will also feel this sense of serenity when your eyes meet this t-shirt.

What was your inspiration for “This Song is About a Unicorn”?
The inspiration for this piece was just from listening to music, I was listening to ‘Sing Me to Sleep’ by Chad VanGaalen at the time, and I guess I love the guitar in that song so it sort of just spilled out on to paper. Such a sweet song…even though it has nothing to do with a unicorn what-so-ever!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
There isn’t much to tell about myself, 21 years young (22 in March) Currently in my 2nd year of University, studying for a BA Hons in graphic communication, I love to just draw and skateboard in my spare time.

What are some of your favorite musicians and bands? Do you play any instruments yourself?
Unfortunately I don’t play any musical instruments, I wish! But I am a huge music nerd. Off the top of my head, my top 5 favourite bands right now are The Smiths, Necrophagist, Black Flag, MF Doom (although not really a band) and lately a band from Florida called Surfer Blood.

What are your favorite tools for illustrating?
My favourite tools? That’s easy, pen, paper, eraser and orange juice. I can’t use a Wacom tablet to save my life (I should really try and learn some time soon)
If there were an epic battle between a unicorn and a Pegasus, who would win?
I would definitely say that a unicorn would win. Pegasus is just for show, but a Unicorn is straight up no-mercy.

Are there any links that you would like to share?
Umm.. I think the best thing to do would to just show sites I visit daily, so here are a few artists that I love and sites I visit regularly
http://www.funeralfrench.blogspot.com
http://www.fudgefactorycomics.com
http://www.theberrics.com
http://thisiswhyyourefat.com/
and http://sssskywhale.com/

Is there anything else that’s on your mind?
I think that about wraps it up? I’d like to thank everyone at Tilteed, and Bo especially for giving me the opportunity to showcase my work, and babble on about very uninteresting things about myself.

I really appreciate the composition of the piece and the little details like the tattoos and the top hat. The one thing I can never say about Oatmeal’s work is that it’s devoid of any detail. Congrats on your print, sir!

Your art work is outrageous and I love it! You certainly do hair right. So many artists just don’t get it. My daughter works at a salon and I know that everyone there will love this, too.
Congrats on the printing success.
