Artist Interview: YAWN

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: dunz0

Here we have an accurate depiction of the mohawk in its natural habitat, taken from the pages of a popular ornithology textbook.

When one hears the word "mohawk," it's common to think of the hairstyle: a strip of hair running from the front to the back of the scalp that sticks straight up and may be separated into spikes. If you were expecting to see a mohawk, the hairdo, don't be completely disappointed because your expectations are still kind of correct. "Mo" is also another term for mustache, so in a way, it is also a hairstyle (my reasoning skills are top notch, no?). So a mohawk is just that-- an endangered hawk species where the male hawks each sport a classy mo. These hawks are known to be the suavest birds in the animal kingdom, and it's easy to see why. Even their birdcalls are said to be the most beautiful of all birdcalls.

Welcome back to Tilteed, Sandra and Annika! What's new in the world of YAWN?

Quite a bit! We just had our first solo exhibition in our hometown – it was pretty rad. We glued prints of our illustrations on wooden plates for hanging them and sold a lot of them! We also printed our first own shirts for that!

We designed shirts for bands which aren't out yet, and created corporate identities (logos, business cards, etc.) and some websites. 2011 started a bit more in the field of graphic design instead of illustration for us!

We're also on and off drawing frames for a little music video we're doing with Sandra's roomie who is a motion designer!

Tell us about this magnificent creature, the Mohawk!

The mohawk was discovered in 1863 in Eastern Europe.

The mohawk with the biggest mustache is most successful in courtship.

Have you seen any cool, unique mustaches in person?

Of course!! Having a beard is totally hip in Germany right now, you just see beards and mustaches everywhere! We also LOVE to draw guys with beards. We're both huge Friends fans, and if Tom Selleck's mustache is so good that even Chandler grows one, it has to be the best mustache ever wink

What's the best thing about having a partner to collaborate on projects with? What are each of you busy doing when you're not designing or illustrating?
Best thing is always having somebody you can count on. For example if you're doing something and don't know how to go on, you can just ask the other one and you either get some critique or just give the design over and the other one finishes it up. Also we know each other's "strengths and weaknesses" and can split designs up - as in the Mohawk, Sandra drew the hawk and Annika drew the wood he's sitting on and we later put it together! We also complement each other really well, when one of us has an idea and shares it with the other one, it usually gets better after talking a bit bout it!

We're both internet addicts and hang out with our bunch of friends, like to go to the movies, watch a certain range of tv shows, play boardgames (Dominion!!) and Wii (Donkey Kong Country Returns = awesome). We also both recently started to go to the gym with a friend, we'll see how long that lasts smile, and we're both huge music nerds. Annika also is a DJ and just started a new party in our hometown called Myths of the near Future – that's one of the websites we recently did!

Who are your dream clients (companies, musicians, anyone really)?

Annika: I would love to do an album cover for just about any Icelandic band. I love Iceland and Icelandic bands!

In Germany, we have a little festival called Haldern Pop. My parents live close by and so I've been attending it since I was 17, and it is my highlight of each summer. Designing for them would be a dream as well.

In the end, every client who trusts in your work and connects with you on the same level, is great to work with!

Sandra: I'd just love to settle in album artwork generally. We've designed two 12 inch albums so far and it's great holding the printed thing in your hands later, I really like the medium of album artwork. In May/June we're scheduled to create a new 12 inch, can't wait for that smile

Is there something that you would like to do someday but haven't gotten around to doing yet?

Annika: I'd actually really like to have a second tattoo. I want the Icelandic word "Heima" (it means "home") on my arm somewhere. I'm not sure yet if I want to write it myself or let somebody else do it. If someone who reads this is great at type and wants me to tattoo his handwriting on my arm, write me wink

I'd also like to learn After Effects and get better at building websites, learn PHP for example!

Sandra: I want to raise a kitten, or two!

Links? Shout outs? Last words?

We created a Facebook page a few months ago so if you like our stuff, this is maybe the best way to get updated with everything YAWN: www.facebook.com/weareyawn

And of course thanks for printing the endangered species of the Mohawk smile

I’m totally digging the fox design as well as today’s print. Welcome back, YAWN!
