Artist Interview: MJ

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: JadenKale

Eight planets, eight notes... perhaps MJ was listening to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony when she created this cosmic design... Or, perhaps she had the TV on and heard the first eight notes to Meow Mix cat food as she was deep in design mode. Either way, she’s stopped by and decided that the Tee Nerds here at Tilteed deserve a tee that offers a musical score while watching the stars... or Pet Stars while humming a commercial jingle.

Welcome back, MJ! We’ve missed you! What great adventures did you have when you created this piece?

It's great to be back, I'm a big Tilteed fan! I'm a sci-fi geek, so the design came about when I was brainstorming space-based ideas. Planets are so cool-looking, and am excellent opportunity to try new stuff with textures.

Surely you listened to something while creating this tee. Give us the 4-1-1... What were you listening to?

It would probably be a better story if I had been listening to music, haha! The truth is, I'm not a huge music person- I do almost all my design work while watching TV. That way I have all kinds of stuff to be inspired by, tons of characters, a wealth of motivations, set designs, expressions and more. I'm not sure what exactly I was watching at the time, but I've been rewatching Boardwalk Empire this week and that's been a lot of fun. I'm so impressed with how believable the environments and signage they built is.

What new and exciting things have been happening for you since we last printed you?

This summer I got into the habit of adopting weird little animals I found in the yard. For awhile I had a leech named Archie, but he died suddenly (I think he choked on liver, which is a huge bummer). My little snail Chester still lives and is thriving. His hobbies include climbing a stick and eating carrots. I like to let him rest on the back of my hand sometimes when I type, which he seems to like. It's hard to tell with snails!

You co-run TeeMagnet.com. What has been the best part about running a site like this?

It's fun to do because I use it every day! The site was born out of a wish to see all the daily tee sites in a glance, and I think it does it's job admirably. Jon of ShirtWhat and TeeTrade is pretty much the best programmer ever for getting it to work as well as it does.

The other cool part, though, is getting to introduce people to new brands, artists and designs. It's incredibly gratifying to get feedback from young brands and artists that a post on TeeMagnet helped them to make some sales and do more of what they love.

Getting back to Song of the Cosmos and your love for TV shows, what would be your theme song?

Either Minecraft Everyday (obvious reasons) or The Rain by Missy Elliott, because while I actually quite like the rain that is a heck of a fun song. I think the key to a good theme song is that it should make you want to get up and do something.

Do you have any links you'd like to show people so they can follow your work?

Twitter is probably the best way to keep up with what I'm doing: http://twitter.com/vonplatypus

Any final shout-outs or words of wisdom for those buying your tee?

Thanks to everyone who took a look at my design today! Reward yourself with a sandwich smile
