Artist Interview: TangYauHoong

Curator’s Statement:

Although I’m almost 23, I have a feeling that I’ll always be a kid at heart. I love playgrounds and I love dogs, so this design immediately caught my attention when I first saw it. Having fun should be easily accomplished, and I think that the minimalist approach to this design does a great job at conveying that. Plus, it’s just funny seeing this dog attempt to slide! 

It’s great to have you back on Tilteed, Yau Hoong! Can you tell us a little bit about this design?

Thank you for printing me again, it feels awesome to be on Tilteed! This design is about a sausage dog playing on a slide. I thought it would be funny to imagine the dog has an incredibly long body that is even longer than the slide, and I think the illustration speaks for itself. The graphic has a clean and minimal style that I really like personally, hope you like it too.

What have you been up to since we last printed your contest winning design, “So Hot Yet So Cold”?

I have been working for mostly t-shirt illustrations since then. It still is an enjoyable thing to do to me and gives me lots of freedom too.

You mentioned in a previous interview that you would like to create art on other mediums. Have you been able to do this or are most of your works just for t-shirts?

I hoped to give a better answer too, but I am yet to really get my hands on other mediums. Having said that, I did try to mix some of my old photographs with digital illustrations. Please don’t ask me to show it, I’m still at kindergarten level.

This design has inspired me to ask you this: did you have a favorite toy or game when you were growing up?

I can’t remember any specific toy or game that is my favorite. Just like most kids, I enjoyed the time at the field a lot. There was a game I remember: Stand on the middle of a seesaw and walk back and forth while keeping it balanced in the air so that neither end is touching the ground. Whoever stays balanced for longer time wins.

What activities do you enjoy when you’re not illustrating?

I like watching movies, reading and playing football, some people call it soccer too.
