Artist Interview: tgentry

Curator’s Statement:

Terry Pratchett had it right when he said, “In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” Now, with modern advancements, they are slowly becoming gods of the mighty oceans, elevating them to even higher praise and adoration. Never before have cats looked so poised for greatness, donning rain gear and knitted hats. Sea lions take note: These felines are making their presence known on the mighty waves… and the fish should undoubtedly cower before them.

Please tell us the story and concept behind Sea Cats of the North Atlantic.

The idea originally came from the idea of a “Sea Lion”, but once I started I realized that this captain needed a crew, and it just went from there. I think it evolved from a rather lame pun to a poignant ode to the big cats that risk it all for a tasty morsel.

Surely you’ve seen Deadliest Catch… So riddle me this: how do cats stay dry on a fishing trawler?

Anyone that knows a lot about cats like I do knows that there’s one thing cats love above all else: getting wet. These big cats love getting wet just like housecats.

I know we’ve seen The Blue-Footed Booby Dance seductively at Tilteed, now some stoic fishing felines… So what do you have next up your sleeve?

Amoebas are underrepresented right now. I’d love to do a good amoeba shirt.

If you had to draw any one animal forever, what would it be and why?

I would really like to draw bears, but I’m terrible at it. They have such lumpy and odd anatomy, I can’t figure them out. So I guess monkeys.

Come now, Travis, you’ve been printed at a number of places, which of your tees is your absolute favorite?

Probably Sun Wukong at Shirt.woot. I’m still proud of it every time I see it.
