Artist Interview: childmirror

TILTEED: childmirror
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Loh Keam Long, I from asia, Penang, Malaysia. I am an animator and also a part time animation tutor in art college.

Your work often reflects the simplicity of childhood. Is this where the “childmirror” name came from? What elements are most important in creating something that captures our youthfulness?
Yes, I love clean and simple design. Actually “Childmirror” came from my short film animation when I was studying in New Zealand, in 2000. About my work, I like to use objects that we see everyday or stories that we know before as my concepts and starting points. So that easily to captures people to accept and understand the design.

What sorts of things/artists inspire your work?
Simple and easy to understand. Artist “Hayao Miyazaki” inspires me a lot.
We all know that the tortoise beat the hare in a footrace, and here, he is beating a bunch of hares in a swim meet. Is there a competition where the hare might finally come out on top?
Yes, we all know rabbit can beat the tortoise easily on the ground. But if we change the place to the river, the story ending will be different.

You do animation as well as regular graphic work. What are your favorite cartoons you’ve done, and are there favorite cartoons of others that you’d like to cite as influences?
Yes, my favorite cartoon show is “Spongebob Squarepants.” I love the characters and the funny storyline. I love to do an animation it because I love to share my funny ideas and story in motion and not just in piece of paper. My favorite animation that I have done is the “Apple & Pear” short series.

Any links or projects you’d like us to know about?
Yes, you can go to my website http://www.childmirror.com/ to see my latest animation and others works. Of course, more coming soon.
Any final words for the tilteed audience?
Thanks “Tilteed” and good luck to all the designers and the audience! Cheer! =D

I hope people still realize that they can buy any 2 or more shirts at Tilteed and get $4 off each tee with the coupon “FEB50”!!!
If there are parents/relatives looking to purchase this for a child, consider the Women’s Small. I regularly pick up women’s small for my nephew, age 5. It’s a little long, but they easily grow into it. Women’s Medium works for 7-10 yr olds.
