Artist Interview: jewelwing

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: JadenKale

Who knew that ABBA could turn aquatic life into a hipster version of a scene from Little Mermaid? Well, let's not give all the credit to the Australians. I mean, Jewelwing had a fin or two in creating her newest print with Tilteed: Philip. Soft watercolor palette, fun creatures, music, and those adorable sea mammal faces. She's won me over. You should be too.

OMG you're back already! How's the new year been treating you?

It's been really good so far.  Staying busy and having fun.  I think it's going to get some high marks.

I love Phillip and I bet lots of others do too. What makes Phillip so loveable?

It's probably his face.  He's pretty cute.  And also it's just a fun, happy design.  I like the way the water is swirling around in it.  To me water = happy, so maybe that's coming through in it.

Do you regularly dream of sea mammals playing music?

Dream-dream, no.  Day-dream, yes.

Since they are jammin' it out under the sea, what tunes do you think Phillip and his pals are playing?

The entire time I was drawing Phillip I had Dancing Queen playing in my head.  So I imagined him twirling around, all fabulous and stuff, with disco lights flickering under water.  But he's been slightly reworked since that first version and now he has a more bluesy style to him.  I don't know exactly what he and his friends are playing, but I'm sure it's swell.

Now that spring is here, what are you doing outside the realm of t-shirt design?

Just being outside.  I've been spending a lot of time at the beach. Swimming, diving, surfing, I don't care too much which one it is, just as long as I'm in the ocean.

Come on, show it... Tell people where they can get more of your works!

I've just opened a shop for my non-shirt things that I'm really excited about.  Everything there is hand made by me, so they're all one of a kind originals, like paintings, crafts, and some way cool wooden postcards.  It's a work in progress, so I'm still trying to get more things in it, but it's worth checking out.

But obviously if you're reading this you're into shirts, and I also have a shirt shop (http://www.mysoti.com/mysoti/designer/jewelwing) with some designs you can't find anywhere else.

Best thing to do is follow my facebook page and then you'll get all kinds of updates on when & where my work is.  I have a lot planned for the upcoming months and I'll be talking about it there.  I also occasionally give away free stuff.

Before we 'wave' goodbye, do you have anything left to 'spout'?

Thanks so much for giving Phillip a chance to get on a shirt.  It's been a loooong time since he first twirled his way into my sketchbook.  Definitely been waiting awhile for this one and I can't wait to see him on cotton at last.  Thanks guys!

I have to think about this one, but Jewel’s style and color choice is obscenely underrated. Great to see it here again.
