Artist Interview: skirochester

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: AdderXYU

Some fishermen were terrified of the Krabken. They'd heard the stories, and went through elaborate protection rituals when they left for sea. Many swore they'd seen its claw poking out from the foamy waves. Others regarded these stories as old wives tales, though I know a few of them who would get a bit antsy anyway when the sea got choppy. As for Ol' Cap'n Fiddler, he never said one way or another. He'd laugh with the skeptics and commiserate with the believers alike, so long as he got some rum out of it. But I'd heard from many a seahand from time to time, so by that fateful, stormy summer, the one thing we knew for sure was that the Cap'n always insisted on keeping his galley stocked with drawn butter.

Hello and welcome. Introduce yourself to the tee-nerds.

Thanks Adder, and hello art-on-cotton lovers. I'm Tom Moyer (aka Skirochester) and am honored to join the tilteed club. I discovered the world of shirt-art a couple years ago, and have enjoyed taking a stab at it on my own whenever I get the chance.

It's pretty obvious you ski as well as create art. How did you get into each pastime, and which do you feel represents you best?

Skiing is definitely a passion of mine and is my favorite thing in the world to do. It's more personal. Something about the serenity of nature and getting away from it all. And of course the adrenaline rush of flying down a mountain, zipping through trees. Art is different for me. I love the social experience of art. Sharing work, getting feedback, the conversations it starts, etc... I usually design with an audience in mind. I'm not the type of artist that uses art to express something personal. I'm an open book.

So I guess a combination would represent me both. Which is probably why I collect vintage art ski posters smile

Crab: What's your favorite sort?

It's gotta be the king. But I've caught/ate some blue crabs in Jersey which is fun to do.

What inspires you most when creating new work?

Hmmm...  That probably depends on the project. But I'm very inspired by the array of talented artists that I see online everyday and sites like tilteed that showcase it.

School is in session in the land of Tilteed this month. Your question: If you were to design a slogan tee for a past educator, who would it be (full names not required) and what would it say?

I had an advanced drawing professor in college (Maureen) that loved random things. We had an open assignment and I wasn't sure what to draw. She went into her office and brought out a large, old, wooden stump. I spent the next 2 months creating an intensely detailed pencil drawing of it. So I'd make a shirt for her that simply said "Stumped?"

Where can fans see more of your work?

A good place to start is my website, skirochester.com. You can also become my 'fan' on facebook: www.facebook.com/skirochester or follow my tweats: www.twitter.com/skirochester. I'll apologize ahead of time for the infrequent updates... but I'm trying to get better at that. I do a lot more work in the fall/winter than the spring/summer.

Any last words?

Thanks to Adder (who I've always thought of as the shirt-world's toughest critic) for choosing my design. I hope to print here again!
