Artist Interview: Edgar R McHerly

Curator’s Statement:

Edgar R. McHerly is a designer for all seasons, including winter. We’re proud to be able to bring him back to Tilteed with this whimsical wonderful design. With the chill in the air, old man winter is, indeed, at it again. It just remains to figure out whether we should rejoice with him or be afraid.

Welcome back, Edgar! Since we last saw you, you’ve started printing tees yourself. What’s that like?

It is great. I tell everyone the shirts I sell are screen printed, but really I just make them with iron on transfers from k-mart and my mom’s iron. Can’t even tell the difference. As a special treat, I got the okay from Tilteed to have this Old Man Winter design made with iron on transfers for everyone instead of silk screen.

Old Man Winter is a jolly old soul. Was he inspired by your own feelings for the season?

Yeah, man. I love everything.

Besides the giant snow-spirits, how do you spend the holidays?

I spend them with my family, it is wonderful.

When I think of Edgar McHerly, I think of uniqueness. Are there artists you look up to, either for their style or their own uniqueness?

Thanks! I don’t really know anything about art. I try to learn about artists and I have such a bad memory, I can hardly ever remember who they are.

Read any good books lately?

The most memorable book I can think of that I’ve read fairly recently is the Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky. My grandmother got a subscription to Popular Science for me, so I’ve been reading those a lot.

Any exciting plans for the new year that we should keep an eye out for?

Yeah, lots of screen printing stuff in the plans mostly.
