OCTOPHANT
Artist Interview: Quakerninja
Resident Tee Nerd Statement
I know, when I go to the aquarium, I make a b-line for the octopus tank as he waves at me with his many appendages. And when I’m at the zoo, I run straight to... the otters. But I also want to see the elephants when I visit. Next time I go to either, I can wear QuakerNinja’s newest mashup of popular species on a tee. I suspect the Octophants of old lived in the quiet tepid waters just off the Barbary Coast, lazily protecting large areas of sunken treasure beneath the treacherous whitecaps above. There, they would dine on fish and, the now exceedingly rare, Barbary Coconut Crabs which they would shovel in like, you guessed it, peanuts. Sadly, the are no longer with us. Another animal extinct due to changes in geography, technology, and man’s never ending quest to find something absolutely delectable to eat. That, or they’re holding court with Cthulhu, planning a monumental uprising. I like the second ending best.
My goodness, QuakerNinja! Welcome back! What have you created for the Tee Nerds this time?
Great to be back, thank you. Nerds are often fans of unusual mashups, so I thought I would do a twist on my symmetrical style and see what would happen if an elephant had it's trunk replaced by octopus tentacles. I then saw a cool sculpture of a tree headed elephant and thought three heads would be better then one and octophant was born. It's crazy and over the top just like me.
Octophants... Where do you see these whimsical beasts living?
Great question, I would suspect this adaptation wouldn't happen naturally unless there was some sort of apocalyptic radiation or pollution to help accelerate the mutations. Most likely they would be found in a futuristic word where man has left the citys because city life was to hard to maintain and nature was starting to creep back and take over. So image a concret jungle that is an actual jungle, with all sorts of beat making there home there, king among them the mighty octophant.
You’ve been making some waves at some unusual places lately. What’s this newest news I hear of you being featured on SuicideGirls.com?
I feel that art is like a muscle and needs a good workout. I felt that my traditional skills were lacking, so I signed up to draw a sketchbook a month this year at art house coop.com I decided for book 5 of the project to do fan art of pinups from SG. Ryker, one of the girls I drew for the project alerted the staff and they were kind enough to feature the project. Completely unexpected and I'm very grateful to all the ladies there. I learned a lot about lighting and shadows in the project, and developed a new wood cut looking style in the process. It's been hectic, but a very rewarding challenge.
For something a little lighter: What are your most notable achievements?
I came across a site called http://recordsetter.com It's a fun alternative to the Guinness book records. Something for the rest of us. I have a few silly world records under my belt, most chicken faces drawn in a minute, most penrose triangles in 30 seconds, and fastest time to draw Homer Simpsons head 10 times. It's been a lot of fun.
Do you have any links you'd like to tell others to check out? Perhaps a place to watch you work?
You can see the videos for the 80 girls project on youtube. *NSFW

You have but seconds to inspire the world. What do you tell your fans and our Tee Nerds?
Perfection is the enemy of finished work, have realistic standards. It's ok if it's not perfect as long as you are learning and improving. Don't worry about making something new, worry about making something old the best it's ever looked. I know it can be hard to remember, but you are awesome, and you CAN do it. I want you all to read this and draw something right now. And keep on drawing.

Diggin’ it. I’m a sucker for symmetry. Animal mash-up that I would like to imagine…. mantis shrimp plus black bear? *chinscratch* Yeah, that’s the ticket.
