NOWHERE ELSE TO GO
Artist Interview: fishbiscuit
Resident Tee Nerd Statement
Sometimes, as I look out across the vast sea, I truly miss the old city.
Welcome to Tilteed! Tell the world a bit about yourself.
Thanks for having me on Tilteed! It’s an honor to be featured. I’m pretty new to the tee design world, but I feel I’ve learned so much in the past year and a half. A public school teacher by profession, I started designing t-shirts as a hobby, learning the ins and outs of the industry and software through tutorials and research, eventually connecting with fellow artists for feedback, critique and camaraderie. It’s been a whirlwind of knowledge wrapped up in a whole lot of fun! I also like unicorns.
First things first: where does your handle come from? Are fishbiscuits like chicken-in-a-biscuits? The world is dying to know!
Fishbiscuits are an ancient family recipe passed down from generation to generation. I can’t divulge the secret or I’ll be banished from society. Or maybe I was watching LOST while creating a username for some random website. Had I known it was going to become my artist’s handle someday, I probably would have given it more thought. Oh well. Fishbiscuit it is!
This piece has a definite dystopian feel to it. What actually inspired it? Do you have a favorite dystopia? Quasi related, is that as pretentious a question as it feels?
Blade Runner definitely had a huge influence on this design. The angles of the buildings in that movie have always been interesting to me and left an impression from the first time I saw it in the theater. Shhh… that makes me old. The dark, dirty hues contrasted with the bright neon lights are such a contradiction; I felt I really wanted to express that somehow. The underwater element was inspired by my need to expand the city and break out of it’s boxiness. Does that explanation sound pretentious? As for a favorite dystopia, I think it changes for me. As a kid, The Tripods series by John Christopher left a lasting impression and many sleepless nights. Right now I’m very much into The Hunger Games series. The books were entertaining and imaginative. I’m looking forward to seeing how they play out on the big screen.
If you had to live under the sea, would you prefer to live like Sealab, Spongebob, or the Snorks? Explain your choice.
Snorks!! They looked so happy all the time and let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to have that snazzy snorkel sticking out of their heads?
I've been asking all our artists school questions this month. You are no exception. Do you have a favorite art memory from your school days?
Art class was one of my favorite places to go in school. The smells of chalk and tempera paints still bring back memories of childhood. I guess my favorite memory would have to be in middle school. We made cardboard sculptures of our names and painted them. Mine turned out so well I couldn’t wait to get home and show my parents. They still have it up on a shelf in my old room in their house. How cool is that? Or weird. Yeah, probably just weird.
If we wanted to see more of your work, where can we go?
