Artist Interview: Hands_On_Fire

Curator’s Statement:

Daydreams and doodles should always be this creative. The menacing grin of the owner, paired with his cute, lovable, yet equally creepy four-legged friend, shows a level of detail that any daydreamer can fully appreciate. Especially when you wish you were anyplace else but where you are at the moment. Mouthface and Mouthpet can accompany me in any lackadaisical midafternoon trance.

What was the design process behind this piece?

Mouthface and Mouthpet were created in a boring history class. I cant explain exactly what happened in my head that made him come out, but we were talking about consumption, so I made his whole face a mouth. Add that snazzy hoodie, and I had to share that toothy smile with the world. People seem to like him, so I’m glad.

Tell us a little bit more about yourself.

I’m an Animation student, about to wrap up my senior year at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I like video games, from Fallout to Scribblenauts.

What is your favorite medium?

Digital. I love to color in Photoshop. After that its just pencil and paper.

I see you’re only 19, where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Well I’m 21. I always forget that the deviant art page doesn’t update the age by itself. In 10 years I hope to be the head of an art team for some video game company, or publishing my own comics successfully.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I want to say “Its not about the destination, its about the journey” but that seems really, really lame. So Instead I’ll say Hawaii, because I’m freezing here in Baltimore.
