Curator’s Statement:

I like penguins. If they’re super cute like the young penguins seen in Happy Feet and Surf’s Up, then they get bonus points. So what does this brand spankin’ new Randyotter tee have? Lots of lovable little penguins, of course! But that’s not all. What’s even cooler is that they’re all hanging out on the back of a gigantic whale, and other sea creatures (plus a polar bear and a man) are along for the ride. What’s going on, you ask? Is this real life? Well, you’ll just have to read the interview below to find out!

Welcome back to Tilteed, Aaron! What’s new in the world of Randyotter?
Well, 2011 has started off well and my confidence has been boosted by some nice responses to my work. I have had tees reprinted, a design printed onto a Thermos brand lunch cooler, and some other stuff lined up for future releases. I think that’s enough boasting for now haha.

From where did you get inspiration to create this design?
I saw some images about whales and then got side tracked (as you do browsing the interwebs) and ended up reading the story of Jonah and the whale and I thought to myself what if I was Jonah? Apparently I would be able to speak to animals and travel across the ocean. I’m not sure how I got to that conclusion, but that’s kind of what happened and this image came into existence.

Is there something that you hate drawing? Why? (For example, some people hate drawing hands because they can never get them right.)
Hands have never been a problem if I am honest. Mostly I just look at things as simple shapes and it kind of drops into place. However, I get really annoyed trying to draw things that need accurate angles like, say, a robot or a building, just as it is such a pain to get everything sitting correctly. So give me a horse covered in hands or a monkey juggling rabbits to draw and I will be more than happy to get started!

What songs are you really into right now?

Well I don’t particularly have a music taste to be proud of. Currently I am listening to random songs by Lonely Island such as “I Just Had Sex” combined with the soundtrack of an old Playstation 2 game called Burnout 3 so um yeah you can see why I don’t really go about sharing playlists haha.

Let’s pretend that you’re a part of a multi-million dollar toy company. What are some new toy ideas that you would pitch?
Probably a range of poseable action figures, maybe a cross between Pokémon and transformers? Most importantly they have to be symmetrical, I hated my toys being lop sided or in a dumb pose that I couldn’t change it just meant I didn’t play with them or made them into the bad guys who got killed straight away. Maybe I should start thinking of better ideas, maybe you are in fact predicting the future and this is a subtle message for me to start brainstorming for my new career!

What do you hope to accomplish in 2011?
The main goal is to break out of the tee shirt scene for a little while and try and create some different stuff, perhaps get a book published or some other images made into paper based goodness and as always to improve my work and make things I can be proud of.
