Artist Interview: Dxtr

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: theJCW

We've all heard the saying "Home is Where the Heart is" — I always thought it was something about the warm feeling we're supposed to have safe at home. What about those of us who feel more at home out in the streets, taking a flight somewhere, hiking through the alps, or even hanging in a van down by the river? True, anything could be your home, but thanks to Dxtr we now know it's what's inside that counts, and it doesn't matter if your pumpin a cardiac-mansion or a trailer-home-left ventricle.

Tell us a little bit more about the artwork, it seems like a small departure from your usual style.

When I came up with the concept, I wanted to do something with patterns and a very clean graphic aesthetic. My usual work often includes characters and types, but this time i decided to try something different. At least the idea pretended the execution of the illustration. I wanted something dreamy, lovely and kind of absurd to describe the concept. I am often traveling at the weekends, so this kinda inspired me to do this piece.

For those who don't know the real Dxtr, tell us a little bit more about yourself, and why did you decide to become an artist?

Hey there, I am Dxtr, currently living in Duesseldorf Germany and I am illustrating for a living, hooray! smile I am working freelance for about four years now, mostly for clothing companies and brands.

For those who don't know my stuff, I would describe it as a very friendly, joyful and funny but even a bit strange and obscure world of icons, characters and type works.

I started grafitti in 1999 and that got me into sketching and illustrating again. After getting arrested several times and having lots of trouble with parents, police, etc I began to spend more time on my desk as on the streets smile  At that point I decided that I wanted to draw for a living and after school I went to University to study visual communications, finished it this year and here we are.

What's something that you would never tell your own family about yourself but you'll share with us anyway smile ?

Beside all those bad habits vicious living? I often heard that I can drink a lot.

You seem to be tearing up the scene right now releasing stacks of finished work, how did your show go with Dudes-Factory and what can we expect next

The Dudes, situated in Berlin, is a new kind of creative label and I was invited to create their 3rd collection, presented in January 2011.

For me it is almost always necessary to get a smile on peoples faces and I really enjoy making people happy with my illustrations. I think theres so much hatred and bad things around us, so art should bring something positive and joyful to the people, in my humble opinion.

The show was great and its still running until the beginning of April, so if you have the chance to visit Berlin, stop by at the store and gallery. Theres also a big new opening of McBess' show after mine at the 6th of April.

I'm excited at the moment, there are so much great projects in the pipeline or on their way to get published. 2011 will be nuts. For example, I worked on a very dark, 148 page graphic novel that will be released in New York this summer. Also tons of shirtd esigns, all kind of boards and other funky things are on their way. I want to paint more traditionally this year so expect lots of walls and canvases.

Your recent show was called "one wish" if you could have that wish what would it be?

I guess it would be to have 9 lives, like a cat, to enjoy life to the fullest. But the legend says in Europa cats only have 7 lives smile

Any links around the interwebs you want to send us?

Yeah sure.

So happy to have theJCW with us! I’m loving everything about this piece by Dxtr. It’s so colorful and busy, but something about seeing a cozy heart-shaped home balances that out super well. This design makes me feel at peace. Very therapeutic.
