Artist Interview: Dathink

Resident Tee Nerd Statement

By: theJCW

I'm always drawn to artists that have the ability to create something in one color, something where shapes can intertwine and tell a unique visual story with just that one color. I think this this comes from my days in high school drawing tattoos with a black marker on anyone who asked, Malik's like the young me but with supercharged talent. He certainly has his own style - however you want to interpret this design, it's visually interesting, and can be a great conversation starter. Plus you can't go wrong stylistically with a black and white shirt!

Tell us a little bit more about the artwork, what does this piece mean to you and your inspiration for it?

I wanted to create something using the universe of the tattoo, and the old ornaments. I mixed them and it created this artwork. I was interested by the old ornament by seeing them during history or Art class.

Tell us about yourself, where do you live, favorite thing to do, why art as a profession?

I live in Lille, a city in the north of France. I just completed my Plastic Arts diploma, with multimedia speciality. I’ve been working as webdesigner lately. All these years I have been interested in graphic arts. I like drawing weird things, fairly dark, with black-lines and patterns. Sometimes there is a theme, sometimes it's instantaneous: just to draw an idea.

How would you describe your own style of art and how did you develop your style?

My style is a kind of funky style, I love the heavy black lines. The main things I love to draw in my univers are from the urban art. I am attracted by the movement that can take a line. This aspect will not only create a pattern, a volume, but also the movement. When it's too smooth, too clean I can not find it interesting. This also allows me not to represent reality, but a work of imagination.

If you could visit only one new place in the world outside of your home country, where would it be and why?

I’d love to visite the mayan monuments. They were advanced in Art, and I find their creation really interesting. In fact, I’m more attracted because they didn’t seem to represent the real life, I mean you can see they created mostly kind of mosnters, masks and all.

What's your day job and do you have any big plans for your creative work?

Actually I’m in vacation, but I hope I’ll find another webdesigner job. I can’t live thanks my Art for the moment !

Direct us to your links around the web. Help us find you.

This is the website you can’t miss: http://www.dathink.com

I’ve also my flickr link, but I really use it anymore: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dathink

Tell us something random, help us be inspired to buy your shirt.

Everytime I wear my designs on a shirt, I’m always asked where they could buy it, I always answer it’s my creation and I don’t think you’ll be able to find it again... so you should buy it right now !

We print a lot of super shirts, but I love seeing a tee like this come up, because it’s the sort of thing that I simply don’t believe the average site would take a chance on. And clearly, look at it… it deserves that chance.

Phix Tuesday, July 26th

Skillfully done,  as with all of the side art. Such great depth for a one color print.

Funny…one of my classes in college was “Adaptive Physical Education” and we called ourselves the APEs…

JCW hit a homerun choosing this piece! Way to go on getting this printed! And welcome to the site, Dathink!

I agree with chump. Cool site. Not sure why I’m only recently taking notice. Has the type of content changed with the site redesign?

Patrick Wednesday, July 27th

Thanks j5! Shirts haven’t changed, just a lot more of them now smile
