Artist Interview: BCHC

Curator’s Statement:

Something about BCHC’s work just excites me. It always straddles a line between fresh and vintage which is eminently wearable. He says he’s been working on figuring out just what people want in a shirt… we hope you agree with us that he’s hit the nail on the head with this one.

Welcome back! What have you been up to since we saw you last?

I’ve been trying to improve my art.

This design, and a number of pieces I’ve seen from you lately, has a different vibe from your last print, and earlier work in that vein. What is inspiring you most these days?

Around the time of my first Tilteed shirt, I was deliberately making designs that had no particular theme or story behind them. Lately I’ve been trying to put those missing elements back in, and that has a lot to do with articles by Jimiyo where he talks about what people are looking for in a shirt. Well, I’m getting there: at first glance, today’s shirt does appear to show something specific, but when you look at it closely, you might see that the scene is quite impossible, and if you look at it again, you will no longer be sure if the shirt shows anything concrete at all.

One of the most important faculties of the mind is our ability to learn. Let’s say you gave up art for teaching. What (non-art) subject would you be most interested in and why?

Particle physics or astrophysics, maybe planetary science, or even helioseismology? Whom am I kidding, people have to study years and years for those, I think I’m going to stick with shirt design. That’s easy.

Tied into the ability to learn is reading. What are some of your favorite titles on your bookshelf?

You’re giving me too much credit. I don’t have a bookshelf, only a place where I put away my TV guide. Having said that, my recent shirt titles, such as Sphere Of Cognition, Every Faculty Of The Mind, It Begins With Principles, Field Of Experience, Truth And Sufficiency, Ever Higher And More Remote or New Questions Never Cease, are indeed taken from a book. Tilteed community of course won’t have any trouble figuring out what it is.

Finally, let’s touch on the faculty of memory: what was the earliest experience you can recall that sparked your passion for art and design?

I can tell you that I’ve had the interest for as long as I remember. Little did I know when I was playing with crayons that one day that would bring me to the very fine T-shirt site known as Tilteed. I’m glad it did.

Because I can’t stop beating a dead horse of a theme, if you had to lose one of the standard five senses, which would you choose and why?

I’d rather keep those if you don’t mind. You can take my sixth sense though, that damn thing is too unreliable anyway.

Any final comments you’d like to make?

In case anyone reading this is in a band or promotes shows, let it be known that I provide artwork for show flyers. No show is too small, it could be hardcore, it could be indie, it could be metal, it could be 50 people in your local punk house or 15 people in your basement, get in touch and I’ll do the flyer.
