Artist Interview: edgarscratch

Curator’s Statement:

Sometimes, simple is better. Six colors just doesn’t automatically guarantee you a print these days, nor do halftones and other photoshop magic tricks. Luckily though, we found you Edgarscratch’s Bird Myth: a one color, beautifully stylized feathered friend on a great colored shirt for spring. Yep. Even in Portland, the ground is finally shedding its frozen layers and the weather is getting seasonably warmer, allowing you to proudly show off this design. Soon everyone will be looking for simple and subtle tees for the coming months. Bird Myth should be one of these tees.

Edgarscratch, thank you so much for joining us at Tilteed! Could you be willing to give a little background about yourself?

I’m Dadi Setiadi, a freelance graphic designer and digital art based in Bandung, Indonesia. I’ve worked in the design industry for over 9 years focusing on graphic design, tees design and illustration.

I’ve seen your artwork around the internet, here and there. Tell me, how many prints have you had since you started creating t-shirts?

From the start I made designs for t-shirts. There are approximately about 30 design may be more, not only for clothing companies but also designing tees for band merchandising.

If you could pay homage to one artist, living or dead, which would you want to create a memorable piece of art in their honor?

I will create artwork for them let alone a true influence in the process of my work, I create artwork for people who are influential or bands such as for sonic youth, mercury rev, malkmus and the jicks and this work has been given, as my gratitude to them because it has affected me a lot to keep working.

You’ve printed at a few places, and we all know that varying results happen across the web at each store. Would you care to give your insight into creating work for these competitive websites?

yes, very competitive. I look forward to many more sites like this. They are great opportunities for the designer to devote its expression in the work, because I see every site has different characters, so more opportunities for us who just love to design for t-shirts.
