Tell us a little bit more about the inspiration behind this design.

This design is a fun mix between old comic and vintage game. I think it is a perfect combo.

What’s your art background? Did you study art?

I prefer to say learning (art included) is an ongoing process, rather than a 3 or 4 years degree. I have a brief art lesson, where I was told to create art that is so “out there”, and to write pages of review on creative process. It was not so great for me.

How did you get into t-shirt design?

It was started from Threadless. I was so much in love with their t-shirt, but I did not have a credit card back then. The only way for me to have the t-shirt was to actually win the competition, and I did.

How many t-shirts have you had printed and do you remember your first?

I have quite a number of designs printed on various website. My first was at Threadless:

Any advice for young designers trying to get that first contest win?

Practice makes perfect. You are your own best critic. Some works are not suitable for t-shirt; so get the vibe, and learn to apply it on your work. Also avoid cliches.
