We love the opposites in this illustration. Flying vs driving. The weight of the car vs the lightness of the bird. The fiery red feathers vs the cool silver metalics of the car. And we like that it looks good on a t-shirt.

Fear of Flying by againstbound is a 5 color print on a silver American Apparel t-shirt.

Tell us a little bit about the inspiration for this design.

For some reason I had fear of flying on my mind (Simpsons episodes perhaps), and I had the silly idea of what if a bird had that? And from there sprouted the idea of a bird that required a car to transport himself.

When you come up with a design like this, are you generally working from a preconceived concept that you put to paper, or do you begin by doodling/drawing until something begins to form on the paper?

Most of the time I already have at least a vague idea of what I’m going to do, though every now and then I just start doodling and something I like comes out (like the other design I subbed with you).

One of the things we really love about your work are your color choices and color palette. When in your process do the colors become an important part of the design (i.e. In the idea/concept phase, while your working, or at the end)?

I start thinking about the colors that would fit the design from the moment I start shaping the idea of it, but the final result varies a lot; sometimes the image in my head is translated perfectly and sometimes I end up changing it entirely.

And I’m very obsessive about color, sometimes I have the finished color scheme, and I like it but think “Maybe it can still look better”, proceed to play around with colors for over an hour and then decide it looked best as it was.

Where are you at right now?

Staring at my monitor, drinking coke, listening to Amorphis and answering this dude’s questions for some shirt company.

Which t-shirt artists right now ‘wow’ you with most of their designs?

Man, that’s a hard one, there’s lots of designer’s whose work I enjoy. Lately I’ve been enjoying a lot the work of Tang Yau Hoong, Keaton Henson, Martin Krusche, Jeremy Shantz and Sonmi Heglund (though there’s a lot more).

What are you going to be doing in 5 years?

Fighting crime with the superpowers I will acquire 4 years from now in an accident during a trip to Saturn. At that time you will know me as “Wizardtron to the Max”.

Any links you want to include?

Yeah, you and all your buddies should check out this bitchin’ site: http://www.tilteed.com/. It has a bunch of cool tees and stuff, and even one of mine!

Anything else.
