TILTEED BEST OF 2009 - #7
After months and months of intense research, againstbound brings us his second Tilteed print - A Study of Turtles. Lucky for us, rather than printing his findings in some fancy-pants reptilian academic journal, he’s decided to release this research in t-shirt form. Printed on the appropriately named seafoam American Apparel t-shirts, this is a 4 color print.
TILTEED: againstbound
We were given the opportunity to talk to the artist about his study/design and this is what he said about it:
I usually don’t start working on a design until I have at least a general idea of the concept (sometimes even composition, colors, details, etc), then I make a few sketches to get the general composition down and then I start truly working on it.
This was one of the few exceptions, after finishing inking another design, I randomly doodled 2 turtles with a viking helm and a top hat for shells, I kinda liked them and decided to ink, scan and color them as well. After that I had the idea of this world filled with turtles with headgear as shells and how they would be classified, so I drew a bunch of them, kept the ones I liked the most, gave them a grid, sort of textbook arrangement and gave them all scientific names (if you know a little Latin you’ll see they’re not random at all, but made to fit each specific turtle) and so a design from a 5 minute random doodle was born.
I ended liking it much more than the one I was actually working on and it still remains one of my favorites (that I have done, that is). Hope you like it as well.

This is againstbound’s second t-shirt to be printed here at Tilteed. His other was ‘Fear of Flying.’

Congrats, sir! I must admit, I must not have paid nearly enough attention, or I missed it while glossing over the entries, because I surely would have voted for it. Although I’m glad my vote was not needed in order to print this!
Nice design! Congrats on the win!
I love turtles and enjoy this design, but I don’t like shirts that people have to be right next to to understand or read.
