Congrats on your win! Tell us a little bit about this design.

This was originally for a "Complementary Colors" themed contest. You were only allowed to use two colors, and I really wanted to see how far I could push myself with that limitation. I grew up in the greater Los Angeles area, and have always been fascinated with urban sprawl. We were maybe 10 minutes from the beach and 20 minutes from Downtown. On a clear day, you could see the buildings, and it always just seems like such a mysterious, dangerous place. Whenever I go back home, one of my first stops is Downtown LA, for some Lucha Libre t-shirts, A street vendor hotdog (Mexican style-with bacon and salsa),  and dinner at Phillippe's. Somehow whatever I'm talking about, always turns to food talk.

There are two things I think of immediately when I think of Odysseyroc, and the second thing is comics. How did you get into comic art? What are some of your favorites you've worked on, and what are some of your favorite classic titles?

I've always been fascinated by comics. I didn't always have a lot of money, so I'd read friends comics, and try to learn as much about the characters as possible, it just seemed really cool. I knew that I didn't have the skills to draw or ink comics, but I've always enjoyed working with color. I started teaching myself how to color comics before the internet age, and learned a little bit in the early days of the internet. I was blindly submitting work for years, got discouraged, and took a job doing graphic design. My wife (girlfriend at the time) encouraged me to get back too it, because I wouldn't shut up about how much I really wished I could do that. I started sending out samples again and landed a job at Wildstorm, in La Jolla, CA. In retrospect, I was really bad at it, but they decided to give me a chance. I worked really hard at becoming a good colorist, and eventually got good enough to make a living, doing it on a freelance basis.

My favorite, is probably my first freelance assignment "Sleeper: Season One", Written by Ed Brubaker and Pencilled by Sean Phillips. It was one of the few assignments that I've been allowed to do something way different with the colors, and people really responded to it in a positive way. A very close second is the book I'm currently fairly well known for "The Boys" created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. I've been coloring it for 55 issues now, starting with issue 1! We've been through ups and downs, with getting cancelled by one company and picked up by Dynamite, but it's been a blast through the whole thing.

Favorite classic? You can't go wrong with Watchmen. If I'm recommending a current title (other than The Boys),The Walking Dead is a modern day classic.

Tacos are a big part of the O-roc mystique as well. How did you get into taco art? What are some of your favorite tacos you've worked on, and what are some of your favorite classic tacos?

Well played, sir. I got into taco art because I was looking at Walmazan's designs and noticed he draws a whole lot of food characters. I thought "wow, this guy has it all figured out", got comfortable with the fact that I really love tacos, and next thing you know, I'm drawing a lot of tacos.

My favorite is either my "Take a Taco for a Walko" design, or the carnitas tacos I made last week. They were both satisfying, but in different ways.

My favorite classic taco is probably an "al pastor" taco from King Taco. Al Pastor is ultimate in taco technology, if you haven't had it, you're really missing out. It has to be properly made al pastor, on a vertical spit, with pineapple. To steal a quote from Trainspotting "Take the best taco you've ever had, multiply it by a thousand, and you're still nowhere near it".

When you inevitably throw a Just-Got-Printed party for all your friends fans and family, who would you hire to kick out the jams?

If you're going "fantasy jam", it's gotta be Kool Herc, opening for Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow, playing Brainfreeze live.

If you weren't artin' it with the best of 'em, what would you want to do instead? Is there another period of art you'd have enjoyed creating during?

If I wasn't doing art, I'd probably would have gone to culinary school. In my fantasy life, I'd probably be a modern day Dizzy Gillespie, or Miles. But, I don't know how read music or play an instrument.

I'd have liked to been around during the Underground Comix era. I don't know how well I'd fit in, since I've never done drugs, but the art from that era has been a big influence. This one isn't really a period of art, but I think it would be really cool to just sit and sketch, during the era when Diz and Bird were creating Bebop.

Where can our fine tee nerds see more of your work?

Check me out on facebook it's pretty much the only place that I'm constantly posting works-in-progress and new designs.

Any final words for us?

Natural ability is overrated. Hard work, determination, and an honest assessment of your abilities will get you further than the motor control skills you were born with.

Love this design. The colors, the overall feel, great! One little thing bothers me… shouldn’t the telephone/power wires be in the foreground, compared to the stylized buildings? As it is, it looks as if the building are standing in front of the power lines, but on the same scale, which would make the “buildings” little more than stacks of boxes, or the power lines many hundreds of feet tall.
