Curator’s Statement:

I have been a huge fan of street art ever since I discovered what it was. The idea of using spray paint to create artwork simply fascinates me. From the well-controlled lines to the fluidity of the art, I simply can’t get enough! Graffiti culture revolves around the use of spray cans to express oneself through colorful visuals. Today, spray paint is not only used for graffiti but also for other forms of artistic expression, including the customization of vinyl toys (my second love next to t-shirts). What I especially enjoy about street art is that you don’t need a ton of details for a piece to be phenomenal. Sometimes less is more, as long as the execution is clean and the idea is fresh. I selected this piece because I think that it’s a fun portrayal of a street artist’s number one tool. There’s nothing I like more than a spray paint can full of attitude!

What was your inspiration for “Spray Painter”?

My inspiration for Spray Painter was a literal interpretation of street art, a spray can for street art? How ironic.

Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and your work?

Well, I’ll be 18 in about a month and hopefully, I’ll be attending college/university next fall! My work is usually inspired by street art and Japanese styles, though I do also enjoy working with mixed media mediums.

Are there any exciting projects that you are currently working on?

My biggest project as of now is Validus’ upcoming line, which should be done one of these days!

What are your favorite things to do in your spare time?

I quite like playing ice hockey as well as watching it (Vancouver Canucks!). I also enjoy skateboarding, tuning/modding my car and hanging out with my girlfriend and friends.

If you could have any one thing in the world, what would it be and why?

If I could have anything in the world it would have to be a time machine as it would allow me to figure out many unanswered questions and see who my future babe of a wife will be!
