SKULL SHIRTS ARE LAME

“The skull shirt: mighty archetype of hip fashion graphics, or easy, overdone cop-out? When you’re a skull, this could be your deepest metaphysical question. With a fun style and deft irony, esskayeesee manages to poke at our cultural cliches while at the same time keeping them fresh, as if we just opened the package. Rock on, little skull shirt: there is life in you yet!”

This is a 2 color print on a Mint American Apparel t-shirt.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m from a town called Sunshine in the western suburbs of Melbourne. A lot of people from Sunshine seem to take some kind of pride in that - there’s really nothing to be proud of. The place doesn’t even have a bookstore! Not one. Unless you count adult bookstores, then we have about three. Sometimes I like to draw too - but I’m not sure it’s something that comes naturally to me. Still, it’s pretty fun I guess.

You do some awesome shirt work. Is art a career as well? What other design do you do?

Right now I’m in Japan teaching English - like all the other people who don’t know what to do with their lives. No other designing going on really - I am a compulsive doodler, if that counts. I like the idea of writing my own comic, but I guess I’m a little lazy. I had intended to put a web-portfolio together, but yeah, lazy… Ah man… I don’t like myself right now.

If skull shirts are on their way out, what would you love to see on its way in?

No idea what I’d like to see come in. Maybe more simple stuff? T-shirts are for walking around in, seems like simple stuff is perfect for that. Who’s got time to study all that detail? Skulls aren’t really going anywhere, right? They’re like a staple food. Skulls are still cool, there’s just a lot more bad than good (same could be said for most things though I suppose).

What was, in your estimation, the coolest thing in the world when you were younger?

Not having to work springs to mind. Otherwise, I guess fire used to be pretty fascinating. Abandoned buildings, jumping off your roof, ghostying your bike, Mario Kart, Street Fighter 2, and just generally being destructive—all pretty neat stuff. All those things are still pretty good actually - besides jumping off your roof maybe.

What artists inspire you most? Anyone you’d most like to collaborate with?

Matt Furie, Neckface, Misaki Kawai, Derek Ballard, Nick Gazin are all pretty cool/influential(ish)/fill me with envy. I probably couldn’t collaborate with anyone because I work a little slowly; I don’t need someone all pissed off at me because I haven’t gotten round to doing some thing that needed doing. I think collaborating would be far more anxiety-inducing than a pleasure. So yeah, I’ll pass on that. Unless the other guy is as lazy as me - but then I’d be annoyed (Never said I wasn’t a hypocrite).

Any links you’d like to share, or projects you’re working on?

No links of my own to offer, but I did recently watch the Vice Guide to Liberia. Pretty good.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share with us?

Uh, have a nice a life everybody.

Well….. I love this shirt more than anybody!
Just when I think that I’m tired of skull tees, I end up buying another one. This has happened to me on several occasions. So this one arrived just in time. I love the mint color and I appreciate the humour, Esskayeesee. This design is very cool. I will now proceed to the order desk. Thanks
